Flooring

Epoxy Floor Coverage, Coats, and Kits

Epoxy kit quantity should use the coating system's stated coverage rather than a universal gallons-per-square-foot rate. Multiply floor area by required coats, adjust only where the data sheet calls for it, then divide by effective kit coverage.

QUICK ANSWER

The short version

Use the selected epoxy system's technical-data-sheet coverage for each coat. Required kits = total coat area ÷ effective kit coverage, rounded up, with primer/topcoat treated separately when specified.

QUICK CHECKLIST

Five checks before trusting an estimate

  • Calculate the actual floor footprint and add cove or vertical surfaces separately if they are coated.
  • Coverage depends on product solids, target film build, surface profile, porosity, and application method.
  • Coverage per coat should not be silently multiplied into a single-kit assumption.
  • Required coating area divided by effective coverage per kit gives the theoretical kit count.
  • Cleaning, repairs, profiling, moisture testing, and etching can control coating performance but are not square-foot waste factors.

Measure coating area

Calculate the actual floor footprint and add cove or vertical surfaces separately if they are coated.

Do not count areas permanently covered or intentionally excluded.

Read the technical data sheet

Coverage depends on product solids, target film build, surface profile, porosity, and application method.

Primer, base coat, broadcast coat, and topcoat should be separate takeoff lines when specified.

Account for coat count

Coverage per coat should not be silently multiplied into a single-kit assumption.

Pot life can also limit how much mixed material can be applied before cure advances.

Round by kit

Required coating area divided by effective coverage per kit gives the theoretical kit count.

Round up because two-component kits normally must preserve the specified mix ratio.

Keep preparation outside the coating quantity

Cleaning, repairs, profiling, moisture testing, and etching can control coating performance but are not square-foot waste factors.

Follow the product data sheet for preparation and environmental limits.

VERIFY BEFORE ORDERING

Use project-specific information first

Current manufacturer data, supplier specifications, drawings, field measurements, applicable codes, permit requirements, and qualified professional guidance can take priority over a general-purpose planning estimate.
