Use sloped roof area
Measure or calculate every roof plane, including geometry that is not represented by the building footprint.
Keep dormers and separate pitches visible instead of relying on one footprint multiplier.
Convert area to roofing squares
One roofing square represents 100 square feet of roof area.
Keep the assumption visible so it can be replaced when project or product data is available.
Use product-specific bundle coverage
Three bundles per square is common but not universal.
Read the selected shingle package or technical information before converting squares to bundles.
Apply waste for roof geometry
Valleys, hips, rakes, starter courses, cuts, and pattern constraints can change material demand.
A simple gable and a cut-up roof should not automatically share the same allowance.
Keep accessories separate
Underlayment, starter, ridge cap, flashing, ventilation, fasteners, and sheathing are separate takeoff lines.
Follow the roofing system instructions for required components.
