Measure every tiled plane
Calculate floors, walls, niches, curbs, and returns separately when their dimensions or tile formats differ.
Subtract openings only when doing so reflects the actual cut layout.
Use actual tile and box coverage
Piece count can be estimated from tile face area, but the final purchase should use the exact pieces or coverage printed for the product carton.
Nominal dimensions can differ from actual dimensions.
Let the pattern drive waste
Diagonal, herringbone, centered, mixed-size, and heavily interrupted layouts can create more offcuts than a simple straight lay.
Waste should reflect the layout rather than a universal percentage.
Round after applying allowance
Apply the chosen allowance to net demand before dividing by carton coverage and rounding up to whole boxes.
Early box rounding can overstate multi-room totals.
Keep installation system separate
Tile quantity does not determine substrate preparation, waterproofing, mortar selection, movement joints, or grout specification.
Use manufacturer and project requirements for the complete assembly.
