Gravel estimates usually begin with volume, but many suppliers sell aggregate by weight. The bridge between cubic yards and tons is bulk density, which varies with material type, gradation, moisture, and void space. This guide separates the geometry from the density conversion so the estimate remains easy to audit.

Volume comes before weight

For a rectangular aggregate layer, volume begins with length × width × depth. When the dimensions are in feet, the resulting cubic feet can be divided by 27 to obtain cubic yards. The depth should represent the intended installed layer, not a convenient rounded number.

Irregular driveways, paths, and drainage zones can be split into rectangles or other simple measured sections. Calculate each zone separately when width, depth, or material changes, then combine only the sections that use the same aggregate specification.

Bulk density controls the tons conversion

Weight is estimated by multiplying volume by bulk density. Because bulk density includes the spaces between particles, it can change with gradation, particle shape, moisture, and handling. A generic density is useful for planning, but it is not a universal property of every gravel product.

When a quarry or landscape supplier provides a conversion for the selected material, use that value. It is more relevant than transferring a density from a different rock type or a different gradation.

Separate compaction from waste

Compaction allowance answers a different question from waste. Compaction addresses the extra loose material that may be needed to achieve a specified compacted depth, while waste covers handling loss, grade variation, trimming, or other project uncertainty.

If both factors apply, keep them visible as separate inputs. Combining them into one unexplained percentage makes it harder to compare the calculator with supplier data, field density information, or a specified compacted lift.

Depth changes tonnage quickly

Because volume is proportional to depth, increasing a layer from two inches to four inches doubles the geometric volume for the same area. This is why a small depth error across a long driveway or large pad can have a large impact on tons and cost.

Measure the prepared grade and finished elevation where possible. If a project uses a subbase, base, and surface course, estimate each course separately because the materials, densities, and compacted depths may differ.

Use tonnage to plan delivery, not just material cost

Once the tonnage is established, it can be compared with truck payload, supplier minimums, delivery pricing, and site access. Truck count is a logistics estimate and should not be used as a substitute for calculating the material itself.

Before ordering, confirm the supplier's current material description, density or conversion, load size, and whether quoted tons are based on scale weight. That final check is especially important for large jobs where a small density difference can change the number of loads.
