Measure the finished paved footprint
The starting area is the surface that will be covered by pavers. Rectangular patios and walks are simple to measure, while curves, flares, steps, and irregular edges should be split into practical zones or measured with an appropriate area method.
Include border courses in the footprint when they occupy part of the finished paved surface. If a border uses a different unit or color, calculate its quantity separately so the main field paver count remains clear.
Convert area to pavers or pallet coverage
Individual paver count can be estimated from the installed face area of one unit. For many products, manufacturer pallet coverage is a more practical purchasing value because it already reflects the product configuration packaged for sale.
Use the exact selected paver dimensions or pallet coverage. Nominal sizes, spacer tabs, joint widths, modular patterns, and mixed-size sets can make a generic unit-area calculation less useful than product documentation.
Calculate base as its own compacted layer
Aggregate base quantity comes from the paved area multiplied by the specified compacted base depth. Convert that volume to cubic yards or tons using the supplier information for the selected base material.
If loose material must be purchased to achieve a compacted depth, apply a separate compaction allowance based on the material and project requirements. Do not hide that allowance inside the paver waste percentage.
Keep bedding sand separate from base material
The bedding layer is usually much thinner than the aggregate base and often uses a different material. Estimate it from the same footprint using the intended installed depth, then convert it using the relevant supplier or product information.
Do not combine base and bedding volumes simply because both are granular. They serve different functions, may be sold differently, and can require different compaction or installation procedures.
Use paver waste for layout and cuts
Paver waste reflects broken units, cuts, pattern alignment, curves, corners, color blending, and modules that cannot be reused. Straight running-bond layouts usually generate a different loss pattern from diagonal or herringbone work.
Keep a visible waste assumption and adjust it to the layout rather than using extra base material as a proxy for surface-unit waste. Each layer should carry only the allowance that belongs to that material.
