Hardwood Flooring Area, Waste, and Cartons

Hardwood ordering starts with net floor area, then adds a layout allowance and rounds up to full cartons. Board-length mix, selective placement, direction changes, defects, and future repair stock can affect the allowance.

Measure each floor zone

Break irregular rooms into rectangles and include closets or connected areas that receive the same flooring.

Subtract fixed areas only when flooring truly will not run beneath them.

Calculate net area first

Multiply length by width for each zone and sum the results.

Keep net area separate from the ordering allowance.

Do not substitute a generic percentage for an installer cut plan when one exists.

Convert to cartons
