Paint & Finish

Trim Paint from Linear Feet and Surface Area

Linear feet alone do not determine trim paint. Multiply total trim run by the developed painted width of its exposed faces, add returns or multiple faces where relevant, multiply by coat count, then divide by product coverage.

QUICK ANSWER

The short version

Convert trim run to developed surface area by multiplying linear feet by the combined width of faces being coated; multiply by coats and divide by product coverage.

QUICK CHECKLIST

Five checks before trusting an estimate

  • Measure baseboard, casing, crown, fascia, or other profiles by linear length.
  • Paint area = linear run × combined width of the faces actually coated.
  • Multiply developed area by finish-coat count.
  • Divide coat area by stated coverage and round to practical container sizes.
  • Ornate molding, rough wood, spraying, and brushing can change realized coverage.

Total the trim run

Measure baseboard, casing, crown, fascia, or other profiles by linear length.

Keep different products or colors in separate groups.

Convert run to developed area

Paint area = linear run × combined width of the faces actually coated.

A profile painted on front and edges has more developed area than its nominal face width.

Apply coats

Multiply developed area by finish-coat count.

Primer and specialty sealers should be calculated separately when their coverage differs.

Use the product coverage

Divide coat area by stated coverage and round to practical container sizes.

Small trim jobs may be driven by minimum purchasable container size rather than theoretical gallons.

Check profile complexity

Ornate molding, rough wood, spraying, and brushing can change realized coverage.

Use a sample or prior job data when precision matters.
