Concrete

Concrete Footing Width, Depth, and Cubic Yards

Footing concrete is calculated from the actual footing geometry shown on the project documents. For a continuous rectangular footing, volume = length × width × depth; for repeated isolated footings, calculate one footing and multiply by the count.

QUICK ANSWER

The short version

For a rectangular continuous footing, concrete volume = footing length × specified width × specified depth. Calculate different footing sizes separately, convert total cubic feet to cubic yards, and add any ordering allowance only after the geometric volume is complete.

QUICK CHECKLIST

Five checks before trusting an estimate

  • Use specified footing width and depth rather than wall thickness or excavation width.
  • Continuous footing volume = length × width × depth.
  • Convert all dimensions to feet, total cubic feet, then divide by 27.
  • After geometric volume is known, document any project-specific allowance for placement loss or irregular excavation.

Read footing geometry

Use specified footing width and depth rather than wall thickness or excavation width.

Separate stepped footings or different footing sizes into individual quantity lines.

Calculate each footing type

Continuous footing volume = length × width × depth.

Isolated footing volume = one-footing volume × number of identical footings.

Convert to cubic yards

Convert all dimensions to feet, total cubic feet, then divide by 27.

Do not combine concrete volume with excavation, reinforcing steel, or formwork quantities.

Add ordering allowance separately

After geometric volume is known, document any project-specific allowance for placement loss or irregular excavation.

Structural dimensions and concrete requirements come from the project design; the quantity calculation does not size a footing.

VERIFY BEFORE ORDERING

Use project-specific information first

Current manufacturer data, supplier specifications, drawings, field measurements, applicable codes, permit requirements, and qualified professional guidance can take priority over a general-purpose planning estimate.
