Concrete

Concrete Walls: Openings, Thickness, and Volume

Concrete wall volume starts with gross wall area × wall thickness, then subtracts openings that actually remove concrete. Footings, pilasters, thickened zones, bond beams, and other geometry should be calculated separately when their dimensions differ.

QUICK ANSWER

The short version

Concrete wall volume = gross wall area × wall thickness minus the volume of true openings that fully displace concrete. Calculate footings, pilasters, thickened zones, and other different geometry as separate add-ons.

QUICK CHECKLIST

Five checks before trusting an estimate

  • Gross wall area = wall length × wall height; gross volume = gross area × wall thickness.
  • Opening volume = opening width × opening height × wall thickness for doors, windows, sleeves, or other voids that fully displace wall concrete.
  • Calculate pilasters, buttresses, thickened sections, steps, and returns as separate add-on volumes when needed.
  • Net cubic yards = net cubic feet ÷ 27.

Calculate gross wall volume

Gross wall area = wall length × wall height; gross volume = gross area × wall thickness.

Convert inches of wall thickness to feet before multiplying.

Subtract true openings

Opening volume = opening width × opening height × wall thickness for doors, windows, sleeves, or other voids that fully displace wall concrete.

Do not subtract embedded items that remain within the concrete unless project quantity practice specifically treats them as voids.

Add special wall geometry

Calculate pilasters, buttresses, thickened sections, steps, and returns as separate add-on volumes when needed.

Keep footing and slab concrete on their own takeoff lines to avoid double counting.

Convert and order

Net cubic yards = net cubic feet ÷ 27.

Apply any ordering allowance after the net wall geometry is complete and verify placement sequence and formwork constraints separately.
