Measure starter runs
Add eave lengths and any rake lengths that require the starter product.
Do not substitute total roof perimeter when hips, ridges, walls, or valleys use different components.
Follow product orientation
Starter products can have perforations, sealant locations, and orientation requirements that affect installed use.
Use the selected manufacturer's instructions rather than assuming field shingles can be substituted without system approval.
Account for overlaps
Corners and transitions can require one starter run to overlap another.
Include these short lengths explicitly when the instructions specify them.
Use package coverage
Convert total required linear footage with the current package coverage for the selected starter strip.
Package coverage can change between products and configurations.
Round once
Round the final package count up after required runs and details are included.
Keep ridge-cap, field-shingle, flashing, and underlayment quantities as separate takeoffs.
